| Per USA Swimming rules, no wetsuits or unauthorized technical swimsuits will be allowed in the 5K and 10K national open water championships. Swimmers that are USA Swimming or US Masters Swimming members will start the 5K, 1 Mile, and 1/2 Mile Open Water Swims in a separate wave that will start 5 minutes prior to the USA Triathlon/Open field. Because the swims are being timed electronically, your results will reflect your swim time and will not be affected by these separate start times.

About Open Water Swimming
Endurance Open Water Swimming is becoming increasingly popular among athletes with swims ranging from a 1/4 mile cable swim, to a one mile lake swim or a six mile ocean swim. Open water events are typically rough and tumble afairs with competitors often jousting for position while in the water. In 2008, the Beijing Olympics featured long distance Open Water Swimming as a new Olympic event.
There are as many types of open water events as there are waves in the ocean. Rough water or open water swimming events normally occur in natural bodies of water such as an ocean, a lake or river, although manmade quarries, pools and reservoirs are also used.
Ocean swims have become increasingly popular on coasts but especially in California where it started 50 years ago. In summer, there are more than 60 ocean swimming events, several each weekend in California alone.
